About the Research Methodology Workshop

Social science disciplines use both qualitative and quantitative research methods that enable researchers to pose questions and formulate appropriate designs of inquiry across disciplines. Since the Department of International Relations does not yet have a component of research methodology in its master’s program, the annual RM workshop is primarily intended to introduce students and young researchers of the disciplines of political science and IR to the nuts and bolts of a standardized methodology. The core objective is to equip participants with a set of skills to prospectively undertake research effectively in the disciplines across social sciences but focusing on Political Science and IR. The topics are carefully selected to reflect both philosophical concerns and basic techniques that are pertinent to both social sciences and humanities. Basic tools like survey and sampling techniques, the use of elementary statistics, interviews, ethnography, research designs, and proposal writing, along with some specific attention to domains like comparative politics, political sociology, and foreign policy/security studies are covered as part of the course. Lectures on media and gender studies are also included. The objective is to create fundamental capabilities so that researchers learn to identify the research problem, pursue it through various stages and learn to reach acceptable conclusions. The course has no inbuilt preference for any research methodology or approach and encourages participants to find appropriate methods for their future research activities by developing a critical or reflective capacity and sufficient reading. The course also has a session on the training of the latest software packages that are now widely considered indispensable in social science research.
